Research Fields

Carbohydrates mediate a variety of important, medicinally relevant biological processes, playing a key role in numerous diseases. Oligo- and polysaccharides are widely present on cell surfaces regulating the interaction of cells with other cells, with the extracellular matrix and with effector molecules. Understanding their central role in cellular recognition and signaling is important for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in a wide range of areas, including inflammation, immunity, oncology, neurodegenerative disease, and infection and offers a wide scope for the application of novel carbohydrate-based therapeutics. Our group is mainly interested in 1) synthesis of complex bacterial LPSs and CPSs for glycoconjugates vaccine development, and 2) application of novel glycomaterials for diagnosis and therapy of cancer.
